About the MasterClass

You are invited to join the new online Masterclass in Introduction to Introduction to Using Optimization for Engineering Design!

Engineering design has always involved trade-offs, but modern optimization methods give you the tools to navigate them systematically rather than by intuition alone. In this masterclass, we introduce the fundamentals of optimization as applied to engineering design problems in wind energy.

You will see how optimization techniques can improve blade design, structural layouts, and system-level decisions, moving from manual iteration to structured, repeatable methods. The session covers key concepts including objective functions, constraints, design variables, and common optimization algorithms, all illustrated with wind energy examples.

Whether you work in component design, systems engineering, or technical project management, this masterclass gives you a practical introduction to a discipline that is reshaping how engineering decisions are made.

The full course runs 5 October to 6 November (4 weeks, EUR 1,000) and goes deeper into methods, tools, and hands-on project work. If you want to read more abouthe course, click here.

You will leave the masterclass with

Core optimization concepts applied to engineering design

How to formulate a design optimization problem

Overview of common algorithms and when to use them

Michael Kenneth McWilliam

Senior Researcher

Michael Kenneth McWilliam is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Wind and Energy Systems at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). An expert in system engineering, optimisation, and wind energy systems, He specialises in multidisciplinary design optimisation, aeroelastic modelling, and the development of advanced methodologies for wind turbine and wind farm analysis. His research spans topics such as surrogate optimisation, airborne wind energy systems, and the integration of computational fluid dynamics with structural design for wind turbines. Moreover, he has contributed to numerous international research projects and serves as the Scientific Coordinator of the AWETRAIN network, advancing airborne wind energy training and industrialisation. He has an extensive publication record in wind energy science, covering areas like rotor design, aeroelastic tailoring, and global sensitivity analysis. In addition to his research, he is an active educator, presenting at conferences and mentoring students, and is committed to bridging fundamental research with innovative solutions for the wind energy sector.
